Herbert Edward Badham, 1899-1961, Australia.
Herbert Badham studied under Julian Ashton and George Lambert at the Sydney Art School, where his fellow students during the 1920s included William Dobell, Charles Meere, Ena Cambridge and Rah Fizelle.

In 1932 Badham was runner up to Dobell for the NSW Travelling Art Scholarship. Badham's works show the influence of English figural modernism, but the breadth of his interests led him even to a dalliance with surrealism, and his work also shows knowledge of the Dutch masters. Like these mentors, Badham was able to discover the extraordinary in the everyday, and he possessed a keen eye allied to a lively and lucid style.

For much of his career he painted the everyday life of Sydney, its harbour (he was born in Watson's Bay), and it's people, both ordinary and otherwise. He was known as a kind and likeable man, and his works are sympathetic of human foibles (particularly when compared with the acerbic works coming from wartime Melbourne). He taught for many years at East Sydney Tech, and it must be said that were he not so dedicated a teacher and writer he would have left us more paintings.

He published A study of Australian Art (1949), only the second attempt at writing Australian art history since William Moore's work of 1934. For much of the 40s he travelled Australia researching this book.
