George Joseph Victor Baldessin, 1939-78, Australia, Britain, Europe.
George Baldessin was born in Italy in 1939 and came to Australia as a child. Between the years 1958 and 1961 he studied painting at RMIT. In 1962, he left Australia to study at the Chelsea School of Art, London. One of the most significant passages in his creative development was the eight months spent at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Milan. Upon his return to Melbourne, Baldessin held his first solo exhibition at the Argus Gallery which launched him as one of Australia's foremost contemporary sculptors. In 1965 he completed Trapeze, in which the Milanese influence can clearly be seen. A prodigious talent, Baldessin is also regarded as a master printmaker. He frequently used his etchings as a point of departure for his sculpture. His work exhibits a fascination with the human body, not as an idealised form, but as vulnerable, disjointed and anonymous individuals. Baldessin met with an early and tragic death on 9 August 1978 when he was killed in a motor accident on his way home to his St Andrews property. To perpetuate his memory and influence, George Baldessin's mother bequeathed in her will a sum of money to commission a portrait of her son to be presented to the National Gallery in Canberra. The estate agreed that a more fitting memorial to Baldessin would be to cast a strictly limited edition of bronzes from this work, Trapeze of 1965. One of these casts is in the National Gallery of Australia. Proceeds from the sale of the present work will establish a scholarship to benefit graduating sculpture students.
