Oswald Walters Brierly, 1817-94, Australia, New Zealand.

Born Chester, England. A pupil of the Sass School, exhibited works Royal Academy. He cruised to Australia in 1841 in the 'Wanderer' and for a few years stayed at Twofold Bay. In 1842 he went on the H.M.S. 'Rattlesnake' to survey the Great Barrier Reef, etc. He returned to England in 1851. Briefly re-visited Australia when he accompanied The Duke of Edinburgh on the 'Galetea.' Appointed marine painter to the Queen. A number of his works are in the Mitchell Library.
