Richard Browne, 1776-1824, Australia.
Convicted at Dublin in 1810, Browne was transported to New South Wales and arrived in Sydney in July 1811 aboard the Providence . It has been suggested that he had some training as a natural history draftsman, as many of his animal studies in the T. Skottowe's Specimens from Nature (1813 Mitchell Library) are expertly delineated. His Aborginal subjects, on the other hand, are a direct response to the hitherto unfamiliar studies of various individuals, though somewhat caricatured, reveal a growing fascination on the artist's part with the orginal inhabitants of his adopted homeland. Browne was in Newcastle from October 1811 until 1817 when he was sent, `free by servitude', in 1817. He died in 1824.
