Abram Louis Buvelot, 1814-88, Australia, Brasil, Switzerland.

Born in Switzerland Buvelot had spent time studying in Paris and worked as a portrait photographer and landscape painter in Rio de Janeiro and Calcutta before arriving in Australia in 1865 at the age of fifty. At first he worked as a portrait photographer but soon established himself as a painter. In the British colony his painterly landscapes seemed very French and a breath of fresh air on the local art scene. The foreword to the 1874 Intercolonial Exhibition in Melbourne stated, 'What the work of Monsieur Corot is to France, that of Monsieur Buvelot is to Australia. ' Influenced by his training in Switzerland and Paris and later friendship with artists who had had contact with the French Barbizon School painters, his landscapes seemed the height of modernity to those young artists studying under the old-fashioned teaching of von Guerard at Melbourne's National Gallery School. Buvelot's belief in, and encouragement of, the practice of sketching and painting watercolours out of doors influenced this younger generation eager to experience and capture the essence of the Australian landscape. While he painted and finished his canvases in the studio his paintings, unlike the highly finished canvases of his contemporaries, still possessed a painterly immediacy. It is not difficult to understand why Buvelot's work was so much admired by the younger generation of artists who formed. the Heidelberg School and who came to regard him as the founder of Australian landscape painting.
