James Howe (aka J[ames] Carr) Carse, 1819?-1900, Australia.
Born Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Alexander Carse, also a painter, James Carse studied at the Royal Scottish Academy. He emigrated to Adelaide from London around 1867, possibly aboard the yacht 'Galatea' with the Duke of Edinburgh, which would explain why his name does not appear on early passenger lists. Prior to 1871, he travelled and painted extensively in Australia and New Zealand. A foundation member of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1870 and also the New South Wales Academy of Art in 1872, Sands Sydney Directory lists him under a variety of accidental aliases: J. H. Carr (1877), James Carr (1880), J Cars (1882) and J. A. Carse (1883) . Exhibiting his work widely, he received many awards including first class certificates for two of the oil paintings shown at the Melbourne Inter-colonial Exhibition in 1875. These works were then forwarded to the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. That same year, he was labelled as 'perhaps the best painter in the colony'. He was a foundation member of the Art Society of New South Wales when it was formed in 1880 by a group of professional artists who seceded from the Academy of Art. He is represented in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia and the Queensland Art Gallery amongst many others. He died in Sydney in 1900.
