Nicholas Chevalier, 1828-1902, Europe, Australia, New Zealand.
Nicholas Chevalier was born of a Swiss father and Russian mother in St Petersburg, Russia. In 1845 he went to Lausanne, where he began his art studies under J. S. Guingard (1811-1897), and three years later moved to Munich to pursue the study of architecture.

By 1851 Chevalier was in London, where he exhibited watercolours at the Royal Academy and worked for the lithographer Ludwig Gurner. After further study in Italy from 1853-1854, Chevalier sailed for Melbourne. He arrived in Australia in late 1854 or early 1855. He enjoyed success in Australia, working variously as an illustrator, decorator (designing decorations for the Duke of Edinburgh's first visit to Melbourne in 1867), printmaker, teacher and artist.

He explored western Victoria with the astronomer Neumayer in 1862-3, and travelled widely in New Zealand in 1864-5. The Buffalo Ranges won Chevalier the prize for best picture by an artist resident in the Australian colonies in 1864 and was purchased for the National Gallery of Australia. He helped to found a school of art and art gallery in Victoria and was a founder member of the Victorian Society of Fine Arts. He toured Victoria and Tasmania with the Duke of Edinburgh in 1867-8. Chevalier visited Tahiti in 1869 on the homeward leg of the Duke of Edinburgh's cruise on HMS Galatea. The Duke had invited Chevalier to join his suite for the return journey in Sydney on 11 March 1869, and Chevalier (joining Brierly as a second artist), travelled with the Duke until 6 April 1870, visiting Sydney, New Zealand, Tahiti, Manila, Japan, India and Ceylon. He left the Galatea in Candy, Ceylon, travelling to England, where he settled for the rest of his life.

Soon after arrival in England, Chevalier exhibited one hundred and fifty views at the Crystal Palace and then ninety-five watercolours, mounted on five screens, at the South Kensington Museum, in January 1872
