Bessie Ellen Davidson, 1879-1965, Australia.

Born in Adelaide Bessie Davidson studied first with Rose McPherson (Margaret Preston) with whom she travelled overseas in 1904. She studied briefly in Munich but soon moved to Paris - which later became her home. Davidson travelled widely in Europe even to Russia; made return journeys to Adelaide and then served with the Red Cross in France during the First World War. She became a friend (and was possibly taught by) Rupert Bunny. After the war Davidson resumed her career as an artist exhibiting frequently and to considerable acclaim in Paris and taking a very works were especially influenced by one of her teachers in Paris the American Richard Miller ( in the 1910's and '20s) her insterests were now more formal and structural. Bessie Davidson's work is represented in the National and most Australian state galleries the Musee d'Art Moderne Paris and public collections in Scotland and the Netherlands.
