Austen A. Deans, 1915-., New Zealand.
Austen A. Deans was born in Christchurch , New Zeland. He studied Art at the Canterbury University College School of Art and gained his Diploma in 1938.

During the First World War he was sent to the Middle East and was appointed assistant New Zealand War Artist in Crete where he was taken prisoner. A prisoner of war for four years, he remained in England for a further six months to give evidence against collaborators.

He married in 1946 and two years later left for England with his wife. He studied for two years at Sir John Cass College, which is affiliated to the University of London. Late in 1950 the family returned to NZ and purchased a small farm at Peel Forest, South Canterbury where he built a home with a spacious studio.

Austen Deans has won many National Art Awards and is represented in the National Gallery, the Christchurch and Dunedin Public Galleries and others. He exhibits in the NZ Academy, Art Society and has held numerous one-man-exhibitions.
