William Dobell, 1899-1970, Australia.

Born in Newcastle, N.S.W. Studied under Julian Ashton and was awarded the Society of Artists' Travelling Scholarship in 1929. Studied and worked in London and on the Continent, returning in 1939. Dobell has exhibited at the Royal Academy, won the Archibald Prize in 1943 and 1948, and the Wynn Prize. He was knighted for his services to art in 1966.
