George Russell Drysdale, 1912-81, Australia.
Born in England. Came to Australia as a child on the advice of Daryl Lindsay. Studied with George Bell. Went abroad in 1932, where he saw original works of the post-impressionist and modern artists in France, studying at the Grosvenor School and La Grande Chaumiere in Paris. He settled in Sydney in 1940 and painted mainly the country and people of the outback of New South Wales. Represented in the Metropolitan Museum. New York, the Tate Gallery and all the important State Galleries.
