PAINTING STYLE:

Rick Everingham is one of Queensland’s leading contemporary representational painters. He works mainly in acrylic and oils, painted on either board of canvas.

Earlier in his career he was best known for his urban landscapes and still life paintings, then came many years of sensitive and subtle figurative paintings of children. There has also been an extensive series of beach paintings and other subjects involving reflections in water.

Since 1991 his subject matter has been drawn almost exclusively from the central regions of Italy. Now working from his studio in Tuscany, this Italian series is continuing, but the Mediterranean theme has been widened with the addition of paintings from the Greek Islands and France.

The most recent works have subjects consisting of a mixture of images, still mainly in acrylic and oils, but calling also on a variety of techniques of various media.

A long-standing interest in sculpture is now being brought into form with commencement of a series of works in stone and bronze.

ARTIST'S COMMENT:

I have a very simple philosophy.

Our society seems intent on expressing ever-increasing numbers of disturbing images. I do not wish to add to them. I have no need to make political statements, nor be on the cutting edge of artistic expression.

We tend to forget that it is possible to view life in a way that makes it positive and full of joy. I believe the world is a truly magical place where all things are somehow connected. My paintings are my experience of that connection.

I like to create works that remind me that simple beauty is still in existence, wherever I choose to find it. I have two requirements of my paintings. They must be uplifting to the spirit, and the finished pieces must be beautiful objects in themselves.

I view the whole process of life as a journey, with our direction depending on where we focus. When my children were young, their activities were once central to my work. As they have grown, that has changed. My wife and I love to travel, so at present we are seeking out interesting places in the world, and I am painting the experience.

Italy has an overall patina that I find irresistible, a wonderful zest for life and immense cultural heritage. It has qualities for me that I can only explain as some sort of soul connection. We now have established a home and studio in Italy so that I can immerse myself in this experience.

My paintings have always been concerned with the way time affects surfaces, and Italy has a wealth of ancient surfaces, rich with character. My earlier paintings were concerned with the physical appearance of place, and the patina of history, but as I am getting to know more of the depth of this culture, and the repercussions of its history, my new work is moving to try to express the subtleties of our experience here.

My forays into sculpture are also providing me with a completely different form of expressing ideas. These are all figurative pieces and are also heading in new directions.

I still love the immediacy of being in a special environment, and trying to express that feeling, but hopefully my future paintings will be less obvious and more intuitive.

The process is simple. Wherever I go I find subtleties, certain images, situations, and colours that strongly appeal to me. I see wonderful connections between things, and they seem to have a resonance with something inside me. That produces a special feeling that insists on being expressed.

The aim of my painting is simply to communicate these feelings to others as clearly as possible.
