John Firth-Smith, 1943-., Australia.

John Firth-Smith was born in Melbourne in 1943. From a young age he believed his destiny was to become an artist. After attending a Sydney boarding school, Firth-Smith started his formal art education at the Julian Ashton Art School in 1960 and a year later enrolled at the National Art School in East Sydney to study sculpture and drawing. . Firth-Smith begain as a figurative painter of yachts on Sydney Harbour his style becoming increasingly abstract as his art developed. By the 1990s he was working in series of striking curvilinear motifs in variously a square horizontal or vertical format. He has travelled through the U.S.A Europe West Africa South East Asia and the South Pacific, but over recent years Firth-Smith has spent more of his time at Hill End in the central west of New South Wales, where he has found new inspirations for his paintings in the bush around him.
