William Buelow Gould, 1803-1853, Britain, Australia.
| ||
|
William Buelow Gould, born in Liverpool, the son of a Mersey River boatman, was convicted of theft on 8 January, 1827 and sentenced to seven years penal servitude in Van Diemen's Land. During this period Gould was assigned as a house servant to the Colonial Surgeon, Dr. James Scott, who was a dedicated amateur naturalist. Gould painted for him, with great delicacy and accuracy the native specimens collected in the bushland around Hobart. He produced a similar body of work for Dr. William de Lette at the Macquarie Harbour Settlement from September 1832 to July 1833. The Hobart Courier and local botanists extolled his talents as. 'capital delineation' . These skills were in part, a legacy of Gould's early apprenticeship to lithographer and draughtsman Rudolph Ackermann of the Strand. Until recently Gould's reputation as a Colonial artist has been tied to his later 'flower' and 'game' pictures which he produced in order to eak out a meagre living to support his wife and six children after receiving his pardon in 1835.
