Elioth Gruner, 1882-1939, Australia.
Born in New Zealand to a Norwegian father and Irish mother, Elioth Gruner began working at the age of twelve as Julian Ashton's studio assistant. Julian Ashton was then conducting classes for the Art Society of New South Wales. Although subsequently forced to become a draper's assistant at Farmer's, the Sydney department store -following the marriage of his older brother and breadwinner - he continued to study under Ashton when the opportunity allowed.

He went on to exhibit widely, especially with the NSW Society of Artists. Norman Lindsay called Elioth Gruner 'the greatest painter of pure light the world has ever seen' and, while the claim might be an exaggerated one, the soft atmospheric effects he produced, along with his choice of cool greens and blues, lend to his work a quality of light reminiscent of Scandinavian and North German landscape painters.
