Born in England in 1935, David Aspden arrived in Australia in 1950 where he began painting. He left school and was apprenticed to a painter and signwriter at Port Kembla, and during this period developed an interest in becoming a full time artist. He held his first one-man exhibition at the Watters Gallery, Sydney, in 1965. He has since had many showings of his works and has won several awards including the Crouch Prize at Ballarat in 1970, a Gold Medal at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1971 and the Wynne Prize for landscape painting in 1995.
