Born Vienna 1920 to Hungarian parents, she was able to conceal her Jewish heritage and survived World War II. She migrated to Australia in 1951 with her husband (married 1939) and two sons, and lived in Sydney. She was twice the winner of the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize and was also the recipient of the AO and the CBE. Judy Cassab is equally well known for her exotic colours in her abstract paintings.
