Born in Russia in 1828, Chevalier studied painting in Europe before moving to Australia in 1855. He became known as a painter of Australian landscapes and as a cartoonist and lithographer, and was the first cartoonist on the magazine Melbourne 'Punch' (1856-61). He later travelled to New Zealand and in 1865 was commisioned by the Otago and Canterbury Provinicial Councils to make Pictorial Surveys to be exhibited in London, in order to attract new settlers. In 1868 accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh on a world tour. His works are represented in several state and provincial galleries and in the Wellington Gallery, New Zealand.
