Born in New South Wales in 1894, de Maistre studied music at the Sydney Conservatorium before turning to painting. He is credited with having been among the first to introduce post-impressionism and cubism to New South Wales. He first exhibited in Sydney in 1918 and again in 1926, but eventually settled in Europe in 1928. His work is represented in all state galleries.
