Born in Auckland in 1917, Rosalie Gascoigne had no formal art training. She makes assemblages and sculptures, and has exhibited her work in East Australian capital cities since 1974. She showed at the Venice Biennale in 1982, becoming the first female artist to represent Australia there. In 1994 she was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to the arts. Gascoigne's work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, as well Australian national and state collections.
