Born in Sydney in 1949, George Gittoes studied fine art at the University of Sydney and in New York. A painter, performance artist, photographer and film maker, he is married to the writer/film maker, Gabrielle Dalton. Gittoes' first solo exhibition was in Sydney in 1975. He has won many international and Australian awards for painting and film, and has worked in Europe, USA and South America, Rawanda, Somalia, Bosnia and Vietnam. His work is represented in the Museum of Holography, New York and in Australian regional and institutional collections.
