Arthur Gregory was born in Melbourne in 1867, the son of George Frederick Gregory, famous marine painters, and assisted his father with his work, later taking over his father’s studios in South Melbourne. He was appointed Marine Artist to Lord Brassey, K.C.B., and Henry Loch, M.C.M.B., both Governors of Victoria; the Victorian Navy and the Marine Companies.
We have records of art auction sales by Arthur Gregory from 1967 and in total 300 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 226 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $8,400 for The Liverpool (Four Mast Clipper) 1930 sold by Leonard Joel in April 2010. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Arthur Gregory are held by the Auckland Art Gallery.
