Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1947, Bill Hammond studied at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts. A painter and printmaker, he initially worked as a designer and manufacturer of wooden toys. Then in 1982 he began exhibiting his paintings in Christchurch. He had his first solo exhibition in Wellington in March 1987. Known for surrealist images drawn from areas such as popular culture, he is also a musician.
Bill Hammond is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1995 of 1,054, of which 712 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,548,305 for Melting Moments I sold by Webb's in August 2023. This year 25 works have been offered for sale.
