Born in New South Wales in 1940, Looby studied at the National Art School in Sydney from 1955 to 1960, and Europe and later taught at the National Art School. He first exhibited in Newcastle while still at school An abstract painter who uses collage to create a distinctive effect, he also draws in pen and ink. He held about 40 solo exhibitions between 1964 and 2002 and won the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1984.
