Born in Japan in 1948 Akio Makigawa, travelled to Perth, Western Australia, in 1974 to study sail-making, with the intention of sailing around the world. Through sailing, he met Perth sculptor Tony Jones, also a yachtsman, who introduced him to sculpture. He enrolled at Claremont School of Art where he met his future wife. A sculptor and installation artist he exhibited in a major solo exhibition at School of Art, Australian National University in 1983 followed by exhibitions at the Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide, SA in 1986, the Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory in 1986 and the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne. Makigawa "wrote haiku with objects" and some of the best examples of this ideas can be seen at the International Departure Lounge of the Melbourne Airport.

The total number of works by Akio Makigawa offered for sale by auction since 1993 is 51, of which 26 (51%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $135,000 for Work 1 (Sun) (1991) sold by Smith & Singer in April 2021. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Akio Makigawa are held by the Geelong Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria and a further six major public national galleries (see list below).
