Frederick McCubbin was born in Melbourne and studied National Gallery of Victoria Art School under a number of artists, notably Eugene von Guerard and later George Folingsby. With Tom Roberts he organised the first artist camp around Melbourne at Box Hill together with Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder. These artists formed the nucleus of what became known as the Heidelberg School. He exhibited at the Old Salon in 1897 and visited Europe in 1907 on his only overseas trip. He waws Drawing Master at National Gallery School from 1886 to 1917 and President of the Victorian Artists' Society for many years.
