Dorothy Napangardi was born in the community of Mina Mina not far from Lake Mackay in the Tanami Desert in the 1950s. She inherited certain creation stories from her extended family and first began to paint in 1987. She lived a semi-traditional life, hunting goanna and echidna and collecting bush tucker. Napangardi was awarded the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2001. In 2002, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia mounted a Napangardi survey show called Dancing Up Country. In 2012 three of Napangardi’s works were selected for display in the Biennale of Sydney.
