A Queensland artist born in Brisbane in 1885, Payne studied at the Central Technical College, Brisbane. She exhibited with the Queensland Art Society from 1902 leaving in 1905 to continue her studies in Paris and London. She studied at Colarossi's, L'eEcole des Beaux Art and La Grande Chaumiere and under Frank Brangwyn in London. On her return to Brisbane she worked for the Brisbane 'Courier Mail'. She helped Lloyd Rees with his drawing in his early period.
