Arthur Streeton was born at Mt Duneed, Vic., 8th May, 1867. While apprenticed as a lithographer to Troedel & Cooper, he studied at night school at the National Gallery of Victoria School from 1882-88, and painted in his spare time at Mentone and Box Hill, and after selling two works, decided to become a full-time artist. One of the founders of the Heidelberg School, Streeton camped with Conder and Roberts at Heidelberg, and participated in the first impressionist exhibition in 1889. and received Honourable Mention at the Salon in 1892, the Gold Medal in 1909 and also Honourable Mention at the Carnegie Institute. Arthur Streeton was official war artist during the First World War.Streeton won the Wynne Prize in 1928 and was knighted in 1937 for his services to art and his country.
