Born in Italy in 1953, Wilma Tabacco arrived in Australia at the age of four. She studied at Melbourne University where she was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce in 1972, a Diploma of Fine Art from Phillip Institute in 1981 and a Master of Arts from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1995, and a PhD in 2006. She has lectured in painting, drawing and printmaking at the University of Melbourne, Canberra School of Arts and at RMIT as part of the international programme in Hong Kong and in Melbourne. A painter and printmaker, she has exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney since 1988. In 1998 she was awarded a Visual Arts Board residency in Besozzo, Italy, and in 1997 an Asialink residency in Korea in 1997. In 2011 she co-founded langford 120, contemporary gallery in Melbourne, of which she is currently a co-director.
