Born in Victoria in 1914, Tucker had no formal art training, but his expressionistic and symbolistic paintings are said to 'show the Australian character with the trimmings removed'. During the Depression years of the 1930s he worked as a freelance illustrator. He spent several years after World War II living abroad. It was on his return to Australia that his 'antipodean' head painting became known, as did his parrots in various settings. Tucker exhibited widely in Australia, America and Europe. His work is represented in all major Australian galleries and in several overseas collections. He died in 1999.
