Born in Wellington in 1919, Gordon Walters studied at the Wellington Technical College School of Art while employed as a commercial artist. He began exhibiting with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1939. In 1947 he travelled to Australia to study, later moving to England and Europe where he studied Mondrian and Klee and the reliefs of Arp. He returned to New Zealand in 1954, working as an artist with the Government Printing Office in Wellington. He didn't begin exhibiting his paintings again until 1966 in Auckland.
