Eminent New Zealand photographer Laurence Aberhart was born in 1949 in Auckland. He trained to be a teacher and after short time in this role, he left the profession to pursue his interest in photography, which he taught himself. He held his first solo exhibition in Wellington in 1978 and travels regularly producing many collections of photographs taken around the world. Since 1978 he has exhibited frequently in Wellington, Auckland, Sydney and Hong Kong, as well as in Los Angeles and Europe. A survey of his work was shown at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, Australia, in 2005. He has received a number of Art Council of New Zealand awards, a Fulbright Travel Grant to the USA in 1988, a Fulbright Research Fellowship in 2010) and a Moet et Chandon Fellowship in France in 1994. He was the recipient of an Arts Foundation Award in 2013.
