Born in Brisbane in 1916, Joyce Allen was a mostly self taught painter and printmaker using oils, gouache and watercolours. and a student of Thea Proctor and Joy Ewart. She was a regular exhibitor with the Print Council of Australia. She made her first linocuts in the late 1940s but it was not until the 1960s that she began working with her prints. Joyce Allen exhibited with the Australian Watercolour Institute and the Society of Artists in the late 1950s, and in the 1960s with the Sydney Printmakers, Blaxland Galleries and the Australian Print Council.
