John Alty was born in Manchester United Kingdom in 1946 and travelled to Australia via the overland route through Europe and Asia in 1969. He has lived in Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales. Since the early 1970s he has held several successful one-man shows, mainly in Tasmania. He has particiapted in group shows in all states. John Alty has been artist in residence at Kreations Gallery in Broome, Zenith Gallery, Renmark, S. A., and Broken Hill Art Exchange. He was a finalist In the Hans Heysen Landscape Prize in S. A. in 1999 and the Outback Art Prize in NSW in 2009. He has also illustrated two historic sketch books (of Richmond and New Norfolk, Tasmania) and one children's book.
