Born in Brisbane in 1927, Dr Irene Amos was a significant figure in Queensland, working as an artist, teacher, administrator and supporter of the state’s visual arts. An alumna of the Central Technical College, later to become Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art, she became known in the late 1960s for her explorations into expressive abstraction and worked across oil, acrylic and watercolour painting, as well as collage. In 1986 Amos became the first graduate of the University of Wollongong’s then new Master of Creative Arts program, after which she was the first woman and first Queenslander to be awarded a Doctor of Creative Arts, in 1990. She was a foundation fellow of the Royal Queensland Art Society and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (London).
