Brook Andrew is an Australian Aboriginal artist born in 1970 in Sydney, New South Wales. He is of Wiradjuri and Scottish descent. Andrew's work often explores themes related to colonialism, identity, and representation. Andrew studied at the Sydney College of the Arts and later at the University of Technology, Sydney. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Australia and internationally, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In 2010, he represented Australia at the Sydney Biennale. One of Andrew's most famous works is a series of photographs titled "Sexy and Dangerous," which depicts Indigenous Australian people wearing masks and posing in colonial-era costumes. The series challenges the colonial gaze and the stereotypical representations of Indigenous people in Western art. Andrew has also worked extensively in the field of public art and has created several large-scale installations. In 2006, he created a controversial public artwork in Melbourne that featured an image of an Aboriginal man's head on a replica of a colonial statue. Andrew has received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including the prestigious Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in 2012. He is widely recognized as one of Australia's leading contemporary artists and continues to push boundaries and challenge assumptions about Indigenous art and culture.
