Born in England in 1822, Barraud was a member of a large family of artists. He arrived in New Zealand in 1849 and though he had no formal training, he was a competent and prolific painter. By 1852 he was exhibiting paintings and engravings in Lyttleton. He won a silver medal at the 1865 Dunedin Exhibition.
