Born in Bohemia in 1839, Gottfried Lindauer studied portraiture at the Vienna Academy of Arts. He later returned to Bohemia and taught art from his own studio. An interest in Maoris and a desire to paint their portraits led him to sail to New Zealand in 1873. He travelled around the country painting portraits of prominent Maoris and colonials. His portraits were exhibited in Auckland in 1975 and in London in 1885 at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. His work is now recognised for its historical importance as being a faithful record of the Maoris of the time.

The total number of works by Gottfried Lindauer offered for sale by auction since 1972 is 119, of which 82 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $920,772 for Portrait of Harawira Te Mahikai, Chief of the Ngati Kahungunu Tribe sold by International Art Centre in March 2023. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Gottfried Lindauer are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, Suter Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery.
