The fourth son of the Lindsay family, Daryl Ernest Lindsay was born at Creswick, Victoria, in 1889. After serving in the army during World War I, he went to London to study in the 1920s. He worked as a freelance illustrator for a time before becoming keeper of the prints at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1939. He later became director of the Gallery and was a foundation member of the National Gallery Society. In 1956 he was awarded a knighthood for his contribution to art.

Daryl Lindsay is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1969 of 545, of which 412 (76%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $19,200 for Going Out for the Steeplechase 1934 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in December 2004. This year one work has been offered for sale.
