Roger Morris was born in 1935 in Maidenhead, Thames Valley in England. Both his parents were artists, and living on the banks of the Thames, he developed his interest in maritime subjects. During World War II he attended various schools and completed his college education at Bembridge, a public school in the Isle of Wight and at Thames Nautical Training College. He moved to New Zealand in the late 1950s and worked as a teacher and seafarer and in the mid 1980s moved to Auckland where he continued painting, relying on his artistic skills for for income, supplemented by part time lecturing in Maritime History at Massey University, Auckland. He has published three books of paintings and vignettes of sailing ships.
