New Zealand artist, Sydney Thompson was born in Canterbury in 1877. He studied under Petrus van der Velden and at the Canterbury School of Art, where he later taught. He also studied in Europe, where he was greatly influenced by the work of the Impressionists. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon. Thompson became a great influence in Canterbury art circles. He travelled to Europe again in 1937 and lived in Brittany until 1968 when he returned to New Zealand. His last years were spent mostly touring the South Island with his wife in their caravan.

Sydney Thompson is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1988 of 746, of which 505 (68%) were sold.
