Born in 1915, Walter Ebatarinja was born in Hermansberg and educated at the Mission School. He worked at various jobs around the Mission and began painting in 1945, being taught to paint by Albert Namatjira who was his uncle. He was one of the original members of the Hermansberg school of Aboriginal watercolour artists.

Walter Ebatarinja is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1969 of 461, of which 366 (79%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $10,800 for Alice Springs from Anzac Hill c. 1950 sold by Sotheby's in July 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Walter Ebatarinja are held by the Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
