Clyve Brodrick Elliott was born in Leichhardt, Sydney in 1919. He attended the Julian Ashton Art School, full time for two years after leaving school and later completed an apprenticeship in lithography with John Sands. He continued to attend evening classes at Ashton's under Henry Gibbons. In 1941 he joined the army and after World War II he became a surveyor and draughtsman for the Post Master General and took up evening classes at Ashton's. In the 1950s and '60s he was a finalist a number of times in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes. His first exhibited work was 'Monday Wash', a finalist in the Wynne Prize and the 1954 Dunlop Art Prize. In 1958 he sold his first painting at the Royal Easter Show Art Prize. In 1972 he joined the Ryde Art Society and in 1975 his painting 'Bush Idyll' won the Macquarie University Art Prize. He also won the Castle Hill Art Society Prize in 1976. Until he retired, Clyve only painted in his spare time. He painted exclusively on board, and swapped from oils to acrylics in the 1970s. In 1983 when he retired he devoted himself full time to painting.
