An English naval officer, Captain William Elton commanded HMS 'Esk' which served in Australian and New Zealand waters between 1861 and 1863. A sketcher and watercolourist, he produced topographical scenes of New Zealand, Lord Howe Island, Sydney Harbour and Flinders Island in Bass Strait. Elton's work is represented in the Hocken Library in Dunedin New Zealand and the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
