Born in England in 1850, Esam arrived in Australia in 1870, and became known as an explorer and painter living in South Australia and Western Australia. He took part in several official and unofficial expeditions into Central Australia. He contributed to 'Smith's Weekly', 'Freason's Weekly' and the 'Sydney Mail'. He is best known for his watercolour landscapes, bush genre and horse teams. He later lived in Melbourne, and one of his his works Mail Coach was sold by Leonard Joel Auctions in the 'Historical George Page Cooper Collection' in 1967 for $120.
