Friedrich Hundertwasser was born in Vienna, Austria in 1928 as Friedrich Stowasser. He finished his schooling in 1948 and spent three months at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna before dropping out of formal art education after only three months. In 1949 he changed his last name to Hundertwasser. He travelled widely spending time in Morocco, Tunis, Paris and the Toscana from 1949-1952, which influenced his art and architecture for the rest of his life. After a successful international career as an artist, designer and architect, Hundertwasser spent most of the last 30 years of his life living and working in Northland and became a New Zealand citizen.
