Born in the UK in 1838, John Deering trained as a royal engineer, and in 1855 travelled to South Australia to work as a surveyor. Also a musician, marine watercolourist and lithographer he first exhibited his watercolours in 1857. In 1860 he moved to New South Wales and worked as a surveyor until 1896, continuing to exhibit his work. Deering died in Sydney in 1923.
Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 2012.
