Born in New South Wales in 1859, Russell studied briefly in Sydney and at the Slade School in London. He lived in Europe for over 40 years where he painted with and became a friend of such well known artists as Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, Renoir and Rodin. He returned to Australia in 1923. It was his ambition to form a collection of contemporary French art in Sydney, but his efforts were defeated by the apathy of the local art world. Russell's works are represented in several Australian and European collections. He died in 1930. A major exhibition of his work toured Australia in 1978.
