About John Adamson
John Adamson was born in Scotland and arrived in Hobart in 1835, moved to Sydney then shortly after went to Melbourne. A painter, sketcher and draughtsman, the works recorded in the Australian Art Sales Digest all feature Melbourne locations and some were published as lithographs and engravings in 1839-40. He died on a vessel en route to Calcutta India in 1841.
The earliest auction listing we have for John Adamson is in 1977 and in total 11 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 10 (91%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,464 for Melbourne 1839 sold by Mossgreen Auctions in June 2016. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by John Adamson are held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
